The ability to harvest new stem cell lines from frozen embryos scheduled to be discarded is an exciting development both scientifically and politically.
Scientifically this gives researchers the possibility of creating many more stem cell lines for research.
Politically this will divide those who would oppose embryonic stem cell research. The rationale for the opposition has always been based on a pro-life stance. If research from stem cell lines can potentially save lives (and few would argue that there is no potential) why fight against harvesting stem cell lines from embryos that will never be implanted?
The opposition might argue that doing so would encourage the production of more embryos for research. But that would be a thin theoretical argument against very real practical scientific/medical advancement.
It's always been the case that the more hard science that can be demonstrated, the harder it'll be for the luddites to ban this technology. I welcome all new advances (even the ones I thought had already happened :)
